Chapter Nineteen

Slim and white, the blade shone under the overhead light. I knew the hand holding it. I knew that knife. I liked them both even less than the last time I’d seen them. And I knew the face too—I’d seen it in Principal Spencer’s office.

Finally, I had the evidence I needed to prove the two Mikes were one and the same.

“Wait!” I held both hands in front of me, as if that could stop him from slitting Lauren’s throat, from spilling her blood all over the carpet, from depriving me of all I had left in the world. “What do you want?” My voice shook so violently that I could barely understand my own words. “Whatever you want.”

“I’m more interested in what you want.” His lips barely moved when he spoke, as if none of it was worth the effort. My friend’s life wasn’t worth the effort.

I wanted to answer, but my mouth kept moving without words. Why couldn’t I make words?

“Was it you?” He moved the knife from Lauren’s neck and pointed it at me. “Or this one?” He returned the blade to her throat, and Lauren and I flinched in unison.

I shook my head—like an idiot. A mute idiot.

“Who cast the spell?” he asked, his voice as smooth and sharp as glass. The knife brushed Lauren’s neck, but the skin remained intact.

Lauren yelped. She closed her eyes, and her lips moved without words. But the shape was clear enough. Please, please, please, her lips formed. Her eyes opened again, and this time she directed her silent words at me. Please, please, please.

The panic simmering in my stomach boiled over, and I could see nothing but the knife. The knife and the smooth brown skin beneath it. If Lauren had to suffer this, I wished anyone else in the world were here with her instead of me. Not because I wanted Lauren to suffer without me, but because I had proved I couldn’t be trusted with life.

I was cursed. My presence here made this situation a hundred times worse. If anything, Lauren was more likely to die because I was here. That was how it worked with me.

“Who cast it?” Lynch shouted. He inhaled hard, sniffing the top of Lauren’s head. “There’s no magic here.”

Lauren whimpered, and her lips stopped moving.

“I did.” I raised my hands higher in front of me. “It was me. But I was wrong. I thought you’d killed Cora. I thought—It doesn’t matter. I don’t care what you’re doing. It has nothing to do with me. Or with her.”

His brows rose a fraction of an inch. “Who was Cora to you?”

“She was my stepmother.”

“Ah, I see. I’m sorry about that. She didn’t have to die, if she’d left well enough alone. I’m not a murderer, you know. My specialty is life.”

“Sorry about what?”

A tinny voice came from the phone, still in my hand, too quiet for me to make out the words.
